sleep whale: houseboat.

I’ve been anxiously following Texas electroacoustic wizards Sleep Whale ever since I came across the video for “Little Brite.” This month their first full length album, Houseboat, was finally released and it was more than worth the anticipation.

Acoustic and airy and alive, “Houseboat” just feels fresh. Their blend of organic sounds and digital sounds feels authentic, and one is never at the sacrifice of the other. Listening  makes me feel nomadic and untethered.

Here are my two favourite tracks, for your own freedom-inducing listening enjoyment:

Summer Sick

Light Tunnel

charlotte cornaton: vanitas.

I love it when you stumble across something that proves yet again that no matter how often a technique is used, it’s the idea behind it that creates art. Stop motion is anything but new or underused, but with a vision and unique take from Charlotte Cornaton, “Vanitas” becomes an original entity unto itself.

selfburning: field.

An intense and amazing experimental short from Russian animation and experimental motion team Selfburning.

jonathan boulet + special problems: community service announcement.

There is nothing to not like about this. A simple but eye-grabbing execution from New Zealand directing collective Special Problems for Jonathan Boulet’s “Community Service Announcement.”

christian robinson + daria tessler: dinosaur song.

Dinosaurs. Automatic win. A sweet little memory trip animated by Christian Robinson to a poem by Daria Tessler.

Via Motionographer

anthony burrill: acid washed.

No words. Should’ve sent a poet. Some vintage-tinged graphic kick ass from U.K. designer Anthony Burrill.

more soon: tales of the unexpected.

Wow. This is two years old, but I had to post it. Commissioned by Denmark’s Ei’Kon, More Soon’s ‘Tales Of The Unexpected” is simply one of the best pieces of motion design I’ve ever seen. Ever.

daniel kleinman + plane stupid: polar bear.

Ok, so first off, holy fuck! Secondly, this is really not very subtle. I’m not sure when polar bears became the sole animal mascot for global warming (I get it, ice caps melting and all, they’re relatively close to panda bears, but still…) Thirdly, the connection between the carbon footprint of your flight equating to the weight of a polar bear is a little tenuous for me and the message isn’t insightful, just shocking and heavy-handed. But, back to my original thought, which was… holy fuck! It affected me enough to post it, so there must be something going on. Or maybe I’m just stressed out now. Holy fuck.

No holds barred work for the Plane Stupid campaign from Mother London, directed by Daniel Kleinman and produced by Rattling Stick.

rhett dashwood: mite.

Very cool micro/macro exploration from Rhett Dashwood.

Via Ventilate

benjamin ducroz: press +.

Grainy, twitchy, glitchy, water-coloury, brown-papery goodness from Benjamin Ducroz’s abstract animation “PRESS +.”
